Ousted Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores appeared in Manhattan federal court on March 26, 2026, as lawyers pressed a dispute over who will pay their defence costs.
The hearing focused on U.S. sanctions that have blocked the Venezuelan government from funding the couple’s legal team and on an Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) licence that was reportedly granted then rescinded.
U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein indicated he would not dismiss the narcotics and weapons indictment on that basis but questioned the government’s national-security rationale for the sanctions given a thaw in bilateral ties since Maduro’s January capture by U.S. special forces.
Maduro and Flores, jailed in Brooklyn and pleading not guilty to counts including narcoterrorism and cocaine-importation conspiracy, face potential life sentences if convicted.
Defence lawyer Barry Pollack has said he may withdraw if Venezuela cannot pay fees and the court does not provide relief.
Prosecutors argued Venezuelan funds should remain blocked because the defendants “plundered” state wealth.
The hearing drew noisy pro- and anti-Maduro demonstrations outside the courthouse and left the fees issue pending.
