An Iran-linked hacking collective calling itself the Handala Hack Team claimed this week to have breached the personal Gmail account of FBI Director Kash Patel and published photographs, a résumé and a sample cache of more than 300 emails online.
U.S. officials confirmed Patel’s personal account was targeted and a Justice Department official said material posted so far “appears authentic.” The FBI said the exposed data is largely historical and involves no government systems or classified materials and that it has taken steps to mitigate risks.
The move followed a U.S. seizure of four domains tied to the group and a Rewards for Justice offer of up to $10 million for information on Handala.
Western cybersecurity firms and U.S. authorities have attributed the persona to an MOIS‑linked Iranian cyber unit and flagged Handala’s recent destructive operations, including a March assault on medical-technology firm Stryker that analysts say used management tools rather than conventional malware.
Researchers have verified parts of the Patel trove via email headers and signatures.
U.S. agencies and vendors have issued guidance on hardening identity, MFA and Intune settings in response.
