James Tolkan, the veteran character actor best known as the stern Vice Principal Gerald Strickland in the Back to the Future films and as Commander Tom “Stinger” Jardian in Top Gun, has died at age 94.
Tolkan died on Thursday at his home in Saranac Lake, New York, his family and the franchise’s official website said; no cause of death was disclosed.
His acting career spanned more than five decades across stage, film and television, including an original Broadway turn in Glengarry Glen Ross and screen roles in Serpico, WarGames and Dick Tracy.
A Korean War Navy veteran, Tolkan studied at the Actors Studio in New York and became a familiar presence in Hollywood from the 1970s through the 2010s.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Parmelee; his family has suggested donations to local animal shelters in his memory.
Tributes from colleagues and fans have been posted across social media and by co-stars since the announcement.
