Australian police say they shot dead a man they believe to be Desmond “Dezi” Freeman on March 30–31, 2026, ending a 216-day manhunt that began after Freeman allegedly killed two officers in August 2025.
The Special Operations Group located Freeman in a converted shipping container on a remote 35-hectare property at Thologolong, near Walwa on the Victoria–New South Wales border, following a tip-off.
After a roughly three-hour stand-off, officers used armoured vehicles and non-lethal tactics; police say Freeman emerged wrapped in a blanket and presented a firearm believed to be a service pistol taken from one of the officers killed at Porepunkah.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush said investigators are conducting a formal identification and forensic examination, and that an independent inquiry and the coroner will examine the shooting.
Authorities are probing how Freeman travelled from Porepunkah to Thologolong and whether anyone harboured or supplied him; the property’s owner, Richard (Rick) Sutherland, who has been interstate, has reportedly contacted police.
A A$1 million reward had been offered for information leading to Freeman’s arrest.
