French screen legend Nathalie Baye has died aged 77, her family told Agence France-Presse, saying she passed away at her Paris home on Friday evening, April 17, following a battle with Lewy body dementia.
Born in Normandy in 1948, Baye began as a dancer before turning to acting and rose to prominence in François Truffautâs 1973 film Day for Night.
Over a five-decade career she appeared in about 80 films, won four CĂ©sar awards â including three consecutive acting prizes in the early 1980s â and took the Best Actress prize at Venice in 1999 for Une Liaison Pornographique.
Her later international work included roles in Steven Spielbergâs Catch Me If You Can (2002) and Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022); her most recent screen appearance was in the 2023 Franco-Lebanese drama La nuit du verre dâeau (Mother Valley). Baye was the mother of actress Laura Smet and had a high-profile relationship with rock star Johnny Hallyday.
French president Emmanuel Macron and culture minister Catherine Pégard led national tributes, praising her central place in modern French cinema.
