Veronica Roth announced on April 18, 2026 at New York BookCon that she is returning to her bestselling Divergent universe with a two-book duology beginning with The Sixth Faction, due October 6, 2026.
Billed as a reimagining rather than a sequel, prequel or spinoff, the novel poses an alternate-universe question: what if protagonist Beatrice âTrisâ Prior had chosen a different faction at her Choosing Ceremony? Roth said the project grew out of a desire to reckon with the legacy of Divergent as the series marks its 15th anniversary; she has described feeling both gratitude and discomfort about the spotlight the franchise brought early in her career.
The original Divergent trilogy sold more than 40 million copies worldwide and spawned three films (2014â2016) with a planned fourth adaptation later abandoned.
HarperCollins Childrenâs Books is publishing the new duology; the publisher has said it expects the books to appeal to longtime fans and new readers.
No adaptation plans have been announced.
