A skydiver crashed into the video scoreboard at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia, on April 18, 2026, minutes before Virginia Tech’s spring football game, delaying kickoff.
The parachutist — part of a three-person pregame team carrying an American flag — was blown off course by gusting winds and became entangled between letters on the top of the scoreboard.
First responders from Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg deployed ladder trucks and a crane to secure and lower the jumper; reports describe the rescue taking roughly 15–30 minutes.
The individual was checked by medical personnel at the scene and was reported to be stable and released.
Video circulated widely on social media showing the skydiver suspended and portions of the scoreboard’s paneling torn away; firefighters and university officials said the scoreboard sustained damage.
The incident briefly delayed the spring game — the first under new head coach James Franklin — and prompted praise from school officials for the swift, coordinated emergency response.
