Nicole Kidman told an audience at a HISTORYTalks event in Philadelphia on April 18, 2026 that she learned of her mother Janelle Ann Kidman’s death moments before she was due to accept the Best Actress award at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2024 for her role in Babygirl.
Kidman, 58, recounted going back to her hotel room in Venice, getting into bed and feeling “completely devastated,” then attempting a fraught, midnight journey by boat toward the airport before turning back.
Director Halina Reijn read a statement on Kidman’s behalf at the festival announcing the death and dedicating the award to Janelle.
Kidman described her mother — a nursing instructor and member of the Women’s Electoral Lobby in Australia — as a formative influence who urged her not to quit acting in her 40s.
In the conversation Kidman framed the episode as a crucible of grief and resilience as she continues to promote new projects including a Practical Magic sequel and streaming series roles.
