In a New York Times profile published April 18, 2026, actress Charlize Theron, 50, revisited the night in 1991 when her mother, Gerda, shot and killed Theron’s father, Charles Theron, in what was later ruled self-defense.
Theron, then 15, described years of verbal abuse and her father’s heavy drinking, and detailed how he returned to their home armed, fired through steel security doors and threatened to kill them.
Her mother retrieved a gun from a safe; one shot ricocheted and wounded the father’s brother in the hand, and another struck Theron’s father, who later died.
Theron said she initially told classmates her father had died in a car accident and has since worked to process the trauma.
She told the Times she is “not haunted” by the event and framed speaking about it as important for others who have experienced domestic violence.
Theron has a history of advocacy on the issue, including work with CARE and the 2020 Together For Her campaign, and was named a U.N. Messenger of Peace in 2008.
