Luke Kennard scored a playoff career-high 27 points and LeBron James added 19 points with 13 assists as a short-handed Los Angeles Lakers defeated the visiting Houston Rockets 107-98 in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series on April 18.
Kennard went 9-of-13 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 from 3-point range after joining the Lakers at the trade deadline.
Deandre Ayton contributed 19 points and 11 rebounds while Marcus Smart had 15 points and eight assists.
The Lakers shot 60.6% overall and 52.6% from three, holding Houston to 37.6% shooting.
Houston was without star Kevin Durant, who was ruled out shortly before tipoff with a bruised right knee sustained in practice; Alperen Sengun led the Rockets with 19 points.
Los Angeles also began the series without Luka Doncic (left hamstring) and Austin Reaves (oblique), both out indefinitely.
The teams meet again for Game 2 in Los Angeles on Tuesday as Houston seeks Durantâs return and the Rockets try to regain the offensive footing they had down the stretch of the regular season.
