St George Illawarra confirmed on Monday, April 20, 2026 that Shane Flanagan has been relieved of his duties as NRL head coach after the club’s worst start to the season.
Flanagan, 60, leaves following seven straight losses to begin 2026 and an 11-game losing run stretching back into 2025.
General Manager of Football Ben Haran also departed as part of a broader reset.
The club said the exits were by “mutual agreement” despite Flanagan having signed a contract extension last year that ran through 2028.
Dragons chairman Andrew Lancaster criticised media speculation — including scrutiny over Flanagan’s son, playmaker Kyle Flanagan — saying some coverage had “personal agendas” and taken a toll on staff.
Flanagan, who took charge in 2024 after coaching Cronulla to a premiership in 2016, leaves a club that has missed finals for seven straight seasons.
Assistant coaches Dean Young and Michael/Mick Ennis are among candidates to step in on an interim basis while names such as Brad Arthur and Ben Hornby have been floated for a permanent rebuild.
The club faces the Roosters in the annual Anzac Day clash next Saturday, a high-profile fixture that now looms amid the upheaval.
