U.S. forces intercepted and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel named Touska in the Gulf of Oman over the weekend, President Donald Trump said, after a U.S. warship fired on the ship and disabled its engines.
Marines boarded the vessel and took it into custody, the White House and U.S. Central Command said; Trump posted that U.S. personnel were āseeing whatās on board.ā Iran denounced the action as āarmed piracy,ā vowed retaliation and signalled it would not participate in a planned second round of talks in Islamabad, imperilling efforts to extend a fragile ceasefire.
The seizure came amid a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports and days after Iran briefly reopened then reclosed the Strait of Hormuz.
Markets reacted: oil prices jumped more than 5% after reports of the seizure and the risk of disruption to a seaway that normally carries about one-fifth of global oil trade, while equity markets wobbled after earlier rallies on hopes of a deal.
Pakistan, which is mediating talks, had tightened security ahead of the planned negotiations led by Vice President J.D. Vance and U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff.
