Authorities in Shreveport, Louisiana, say a gunman killed eight children early on Sunday, April 19, 2026, in what police have described as a domestic disturbance that spread across multiple homes.
Officers said seven of the children were the suspect’s own; victims’ ages were reported as ranging from about 1 to 14.
The attack left at least 10 people struck by gunfire, including two adult women in critical condition and a teenager with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police identified the lone suspect as Shamar Elkins; he allegedly shot a woman on the street before reaching a nearby residence where most of the children were killed.
After the shootings the suspect carjacked a vehicle, led officers on a pursuit into Bossier Parish and was shot dead after officers fired on his vehicle.
The Louisiana State Police have been asked to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
Investigators described an extensive crime scene spanning multiple properties and said they were treating the incident as domestic in nature.
Local and state officials, including the governor and members of Congress, issued statements of shock and condolences as authorities continue evidence collection and victim identification.
