A gunman opened fire at the Teotihuacan archaeological complex northeast of Mexico City on April 20, 2026, killing a Canadian tourist and wounding several others before fatally shooting himself, Mexican authorities said.
Officials reported four people were wounded by gunfire and two others injured after falls during the panic; those hurt included visitors from Canada, Colombia and Russia.
Security forces recovered a firearm, a bladed weapon and ammunition at the scene.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said federal, state and local agencies were coordinating the response and that authorities were in contact with the Canadian embassy.
The site, one of Mexicoâs most visited cultural attractions with about 1.8 million visitors last year, was evacuated and temporarily closed while investigators processed the Pyramid of the Moon area.
Early statements from the State of Mexico described the attacker as acting alone; motives have not been established.
Authorities have launched an investigation and increased security at the complex as officials assess how the assailant gained access with weapons and consider tighter entry checks and surveillance measures.
