Veteran right-hander Lucas Giolito signed a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2027 with the San Diego Padres on April 22, 2026, ending his month-long free agency.
Financial terms were not officially disclosed; multiple media reports pegged the prorated 2026 salary at about $3 million with as much as $5 million in performance bonuses.
The 31-year-old Southern California native went 10-4 with a 3.41 ERA in 26 starts for the Boston Red Sox in 2025 and has nine major-league seasons to his name, including an All-Star selection (2019) and a 2020 no-hitter.
The signing comes as the Padres â tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers at 16-7 and boasting the majorsâ second-lowest team ERA â cope with injuries to Nick Pivetta (elbow flexor), Joe Musgrove (Tommy John recovery setback) and the season-long absence of Yu Darvish.
San Diego transferred RHP Bryan Hoeing to the 60-day injured list to open a 40-man roster spot.
The club plans to have Giolito build arm strength at Low-A Lake Elsinore before joining the big-league rotation; roster rules require he be added within 25 days.
