The Dallas Cowboys announced on April 22 they will have wide receiver George Pickens play the 2026 season on the non-exclusive franchise tag and are not negotiating a long-term extension this offseason.
Executive vice president Stephen Jones made the decision public at the teamâs pre-draft news conference in Frisco, Texas.
The tag is worth about $27.3 million for 2026; Pickens has not signed the tender and therefore cannot be fined for skipping mandatory minicamp but would forfeit game checks if he missed regular-season games.
The club informed Pickensâ agent, David Mulugheta, last week.
Pickens, acquired from Pittsburgh last year, posted career highs in 2025 with 93 catches for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns.
Dallas cited salary-structure and the newness of Pickens to the roster â alongside high salaries for quarterback Dak Prescott and receiver CeeDee Lamb â as reasons for pausing extension talks.
The team left open the possibility of future negotiations or using the tag again in 2027; the decision also raises the prospect of a holdout or trade and could influence Dallasâ approach in the April draft and roster planning.
