New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on April 29, 2026, that he would encourage Britain’s King Charles III to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond to India, remarks made at a press conference during the monarch’s state visit to the United States.
Hours later the mayor and the king attended a wreath-laying at the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan, where they exchanged handshakes and brief words.
The 105.6-carat Koh-i-Noor, taken by the British in 1849 after the annexation of Punjab, is mounted in the Crown of the Queen Mother and displayed at the Tower of London.
India has repeatedly sought its return; Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan have also laid claim.
Buckingham Palace declined to comment on Mamdani’s call.
The remark came amid a high-profile U.S. visit in which Charles addressed Congress and was hosted at a state dinner, intensifying attention on historical restitution debates as the monarchy conducts public diplomacy in the United States.
