Tesla is recalling 218,868 vehicles in the United States after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said a software defect can delay rearview camera images when drivers shift into reverse, reducing rear visibility and increasing crash risk.
The recall, announced in early May 2026, covers select Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles with hardware version 3 and software version 2026.8.6.
Tesla has issued a free over-the-air remedy (reported as 2026.8.6.1) and says more than 99.92% of affected vehicles have successfully loaded the update.
Regulators reported no confirmed crashes, deaths or injuries tied to the defect; Tesla cited 27 warranty claims and two field reports potentially related to the issue.
The action follows heightened regulatory scrutiny of Tesla software and driver-assistance features, including a recently closed NHTSA probe into roughly 2.6 million vehicles over a remote-movement feature.
Manufacturers and safety watchdogs have been attentive to rearview-camera performance after prior industry recalls and enforcement actions.
