Rob Base (born Robert Ginyard), the Harlem-born rapper best known as one half of Rob Base & DJ E‑Z Rock, died May 22, 2026, at age 59 after a private battle with cancer, his family said in an Instagram statement.
Base rose to international fame with the 1988 single “It Takes Two,” a high-energy fusion of hip-hop and house that became a platinum-certified anthem, reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Dance/Club Songs chart and crossed into the Hot 100.
The track has been widely sampled and licensed, appearing in films and influencing generations of artists.
Base and his partner Rodney “DJ E‑Z Rock” Bryce—who died in 2014—began performing together as childhood friends from Harlem and helped push rap into mainstream dance culture.
In later years Base continued touring on nostalgia bills such as the I Love the ’90s Tour and earned credits as a producer on projects including the 2025 film Urban Flesh Eaters.
The family’s announcement praised his music, energy and legacy and said he died peacefully surrounded by family; he is survived by his children and a wide circle of peers and fans.
