HBO’s Euphoria delivered a shocking turn in the penultimate episode of season three, “Rain or Shine,” when Jacob Elordi’s character Nate Jacobs is killed after being buried alive and bitten by a rattlesnake.
The episode, broadcast in late May 2026, closes a multi-season arc for Nate, whose debts to a criminal figure led to his abduction.
Producer–creator Sam Levinson told Esquire he planned Nate’s exit for the season and wanted a violent, anxiety-inducing payoff that mixed karma with horror.
Behind-the-scenes coverage and a post-show segment showed Elordi filmed confined coffin scenes with trained snakes; production used a boa constrictor fitted with a fake rattler for shots inside the casket and other rattlesnake footage for effect.
Reactions have been mixed: many viewers celebrated Nate’s comeuppance while others criticized the scene as gratuitous or anticlimactic.
The death sets up high stakes for the May 31 season finale, fuels social-media debate about storytelling and on-set safety, and marks a high-profile exit for Elordi as he pursues further film roles.
