Claude Lemieux, the four-time Stanley Cup champion who played 21 NHL seasons, died by suicide on May 28, 2026, and his family said on May 31 they will donate his brain to the UNITE Brain Bank at Boston University's CTE Center.
Authorities said the 60-year-old was found in a rear warehouse of the family-owned furniture store in Lake Park, Florida.
The family released a statement via daughter Claudia Lemieux Bishop granting the CTE Center permission to identify Lemieux by name in connection with any findings but cautioned that no conclusions should be drawn about any diagnosis at this time.
Lemieux, a noted playoff performer and 1994-95 Conn Smythe winner, had recently appeared as a torchbearer at the Montreal Canadiens' Bell Centre.
The family described the donation as "a gift to science, to athletes, and to future generations" and asked the public to treat the circumstances of his death with care and compassion.
The statement also directs those in crisis to support resources.
