Philadelphia left-hander Cristopher Sanchez extended his consecutive shutout innings streak to 48 2/3 with four more scoreless frames against the San Diego Padres on June 3, moving into third place on the Live Ball Era career list behind Orel Hershiser (59) and Don Drysdale (58). Sanchez struck out Fernando Tatis Jr. and worked through the Padres in order in the first inning, fanned Xander Bogaerts in the second and Jase Bowen in the third.
The 29-year-old, who earlier this season surpassed Grover Cleveland Alexander to set the Phillies franchise mark, has walked just 16 and struck out 95 in 79.1 innings (1.47 ERA this season) while holding hitters to roughly a .153 average and relying heavily on a changeup averaging about 86.5 mph.
Philadelphia opened the series with a 3-2 victory; San Diego has struggled offensively in recent games.
Sanchezâs run has drawn national attention, shifted betting lines and put him in early contention for NL Cy Young consideration as the Phillies lean on dominant starting pitching amid uneven offense.
