A large fire broke out on the morning of Feb. 5, 2026 at the GSI Helmholtz Centre in Darmstadt, south-west Germany, authorities said.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control but said extinguishing work could continue into the evening.
The fire reportedly started in the area housing the centre's heavy-ion particle accelerator, prompting police and emergency teams to assess whether hazardous substances were released.
There were no reported injuries and the institute was not immediately reachable for comment.
Images showed heavy smoke pouring from the building and nearby residents were advised to keep doors and windows shut and to turn off ventilation systems where possible.
Officials said the cause of the blaze remained unclear and investigations were underway.
The GSI facility, which conducts accelerator-based research using heavy ions such as gold and lead, is a key site for experimental physics and international collaborations.
