A 37-year-old man believed to be homeless was set on fire while sleeping outside New York’s Penn Station on the evening of March 2, 2026, police said.
The attack occurred around 8:40 p.m. near the station’s Amtrak rotunda; three men approached the victim and ignited his clothing before fleeing into the crowded transit hub.
Bystanders and emergency crews extinguished the flames and rushed the victim to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell’s burn unit; police described his injuries as second-degree burns to his arm and back and said he was in stable condition.
Surveillance footage led investigators to arrest two suspects in the days after the attack: Damon Johnson, 47, who faces attempted murder and assault charges and whose criminal record authorities described as extensive, and 33-year-old Lyla Najjar, charged with assault.
A third suspect is believed to remain at large.
Amtrak Police and the NYPD are continuing the investigation and have asked the public for tips.
The incident has renewed concerns about safety for people sleeping in public spaces and about security at major transit nodes.
