Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney completed a four-day visit to India from Feb. 27 to March 2, 2026, aiming to repair relations strained since 2023.
Ottawa and New Delhi signed or launched multiple memorandums of understanding and exploratory pacts across energy, critical minerals, space, agriculture, AI and defence, and agreed to pursue a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) within the year.
A highlight was a roughly CA$2.6 billion (about US$1.9 billion) commercial deal for long-term uranium supplies between Cameco and India’s Department of Atomic Energy.
Carney said he raised concerns about foreign interference in “frank” discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi but declined to detail whether that included allegations linking Indian agents to the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.
His remarks followed reporting that Canadian security officials had been shown evidence implicating Indian consular staff in information sharing connected to the slaying.
Carney also distanced himself from a prior anonymous government briefing that suggested Indian interference had stopped.
He later praised Modi’s delivery-focused governance at a Lowy Institute event in Sydney as domestic debate in Canada intensified over the reset.
