📰 Full Story
Disney released the full trailer this week for its live‑action reimagining of Moana, offering the first extended look at newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia as the titular wayfinder and Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui.
The trailer, published March 23–24, 2026, confirms a July 10 theatrical release and highlights returning creative talent including director Thomas Kail and producers Lin‑Manuel Miranda and Johnson.
Johnson and Kail have described the practical design work behind Maui — a heavily tattooed prosthetic bodysuit Johnson said added roughly 40 pounds and a staged wig that can weigh a further seven pounds when wet — and the two‑and‑a‑half‑hour daily transformation process.
Online reaction to the trailer has been mixed: some praised Lagaʻaia’s performance and the visuals, while many viewers criticised Johnson’s live‑action look, particularly his wig, and questioned the creative case for a near‑shot‑for‑shot remake only a decade after the original and two years after Moana 2.
Disney has promoted the film as a cultural reimagining with original music by Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi and Mark Mancina.
