Gearbox Software’s first Borderlands 4 story pack, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, has provoked widespread player anger after launching on March 26 priced at $29.99.
The premium pack adds a new Vault Hunter (C4SH the Rogue), a new zone (Whispering Glacier), multiple bosses, weapons, cosmetics and raises the level cap from 50 to 60 as part of a larger 1.5 update.
Players and reviewers criticised the pack as too short — some reporting completion in roughly two to three hours — and Steam ratings dipped to a “mostly negative” level with about 32% recommending the DLC. Owners of higher-tier editions who expected the content included voiced particular frustration.
Alongside pricing complaints, community debate has continued over a newly introduced shared-progression feature; Gearbox says it is working to make that option configurable following feedback.
Developers also acknowledged lingering PC performance issues from the game’s September 2025 launch but said recent patches have boosted average FPS and halved crashes, with weekly fixes planned through 2026.

The paid pack is widely reported as a bundle of a short (~2–4 hr) story and a new playable character, explaining the $30 cost and the backlash over perceived value. The situation is worsened by a reporting error about edition inclusions and a bug locking access for some higher‑tier purchasers.
