Prince Harry spoke candidly on April 15 at a Movember event in Melbourne about feeling a sense of “disconnection” after the birth of his first child and the challenges of early fatherhood.
The Duke of Sussex, on a private visit to Australia with his wife Meghan, said he initially felt detached because his wife was “creating life” while he was only able to witness it.
He credited therapy with helping him prepare for parenting and urged greater openness about mental health for new fathers.
Harry, who has two children, Archie (6) and Lilibet (4), also referenced lessons from his relationship with his father, King Charles, and the importance of communicating with partners to protect relationships under the strains of parenthood.
The Movember appearance coincided with a launch of new fatherhood research and calls for routine mental-health screening for new dads.
Harry will remain in Australia for additional engagements, including a keynote at the InterEdge Psychosocial Safety Summit and a visit to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
