Coventry City secured a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2001 after a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers on April 17, 2026.
Needing only a point to make promotion mathematically certain, Coventry were pegged back by RyĹya Morishitaâs 54th-minute strike but Bobby Thomas rose to head a late equaliser six minutes from time, sparking jubilant scenes among the clubâs travelling supporters.
The result left Coventry on 86 points from 43 games with three matches remaining, meaning automatic promotion with games to spare and a comfortable lead over nearest challengers Ipswich and Millwall.
Frank Lampard, appointed in November 2024, was visibly emotional after guiding the Sky Blues back to the top flight, having revamped a squad that features loan goalkeeper Carl Rushworth and forwards such as Haji Wright and Brandon Thomas-Asante.
The draw also helped Blackburn in their relegation battle by securing a valuable point.
Coventryâs rise â and owner Doug Kingâs recent stewardship of the club â ends a 25-year exile from Englandâs top tier and resets the clubâs sporting and commercial priorities ahead of next season.
