Carlton Football Club and the AFL are investigating why Elijah Hollands was allowed to play through an apparent mental health episode during a Thursday night clash with Collingwood at the MCG. Fan and broadcast footage showed the 23-year-old behaving erratically and finishing the game with one disposal.
Carlton CEO Graham Wright confirmed the club knew Hollands âwas strugglingâ during the match, that medical staff monitored his heartbeat and that two doctors and a nurse were present.
The club has opened an internal review and the AFL has requested the outcome once complete; senior AFL executive Laura Kane is involved in inquiries.
Carlton says it does not currently suspect drugs or alcohol, while media reports cite Collingwood players saying Hollands told them he had been drinking.
Hollands will not travel to the upcoming Perth match and is receiving family and club support.
The situation has prompted calls for clearer protocols to manage on-field mental health episodes and raised the prospect of AFL disciplinary action or a WorkSafe Victoria inquiry if handling is found inadequate.
