Rapper Tory Lanez, legal name Daystar Peterson, filed a federal lawsuit this week seeking $100 million in damages from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the warden and prison staff over a May 12, 2025 attack.
The complaint says Lanez was stabbed 16 times at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi by fellow inmate Santino Casio, who allegedly used a homemade shank.
Lanez suffered multiple stab wounds, two collapsed lungs and was airlifted to hospital.
The suit alleges prison officials negligently housed the men together despite Casioās violent record ā including a life sentence for second-degree murder and prior weapon convictions ā and that officersā response was slow and failed to deploy measures such as flash grenades or smoke to stop the attack.
Lanez also claims the prison unlawfully seized songbooks containing unpublished lyrics and notes.
There is no public record of criminal charges against Casio in the assault.
Lanez is serving a 10-year sentence related to a 2022 conviction for shooting Megan Thee Stallion; he was later moved to California Menās Colony in San Luis Obispo.
