North Korea on April 19-20 conducted multiple short-range ballistic missile launches that state media said were intended to evaluate cluster-bomb and fragmentation-mine warheads.
KCNA said five upgraded Hwasong-11 Ra surface-to-surface tactical missiles were fired from the Sinpo area toward an island about 136 km away, striking a roughly 12.5-13 hectare target area.
Leader Kim Jong Un supervised the tests and was shown in official photos watching the launches alongside military officials and his daughter, fuelling succession speculation.
South Korea’s military, and U.S. and Japanese forces, detected the launches; Seoul held an emergency National Security Council meeting and condemned the activity as a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions.
The launches are the fourth this month and seventh so far this year, and come amid international concern over increased North Korean nuclear-related activity flagged by the IAEA. Analysts link the spike in testing to broader regional tensions, including the U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran, and to Pyongyang’s efforts to expand options for penetrating allied defences.
