The Israel Defense Forces on April 19–20 confirmed the authenticity of a widely circulated photograph showing an Israeli soldier striking the head of a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon and said the incident is under investigation.
The image, first shared by Palestinian journalist Younis Tirawi, appears to show a troop using a sledgehammer on a crucifix that had fallen from its cross in the Christian village of Debel near the Israeli border.
The IDF said it viewed the conduct “with great severity,” described it as inconsistent with military values, and said the Northern Command is probing the matter through the chain of command.
The army also said it would take “appropriate measures” against those involved and was working with the local community to restore the statue.
The photograph went viral on social media and prompted condemnation inside Israel and abroad, coming days after a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon amid operations targeting Hezbollah positions in the south.
