📰 Full Story
North Korea on Sunday, April 19, conducted multiple short-range ballistic missile tests that state media said evaluated cluster-bomb and fragmentation-mine warheads.
KCNA said five upgraded Hwasong-11 Ra surface-to-surface missiles were fired from the Sinpo area toward an island target roughly 136-140 km away, striking about 12.5-13 hectares with “very high density.” Images released showed leader Kim Jong Un watching the launches with military officials and his daughter, fuelling succession speculation.
Seoul held an emergency security meeting and reported it detected several projectiles; the U.S. and Japan also tracked the launches.
The tests mark at least the fourth ballistic launch this month and the seventh this year amid wider North Korean weapons activity, including recent cruise-missile firings and naval tests.
Analysts and officials cited by international outlets warned the moves violate U.N. Security Council restrictions, could put Seoul and nearby U.S. bases within range if deployed forward, and come as the IAEA reports a rapid increase in nuclear-related activity in the North.
