Microsoft this week rolled out an “Agent Mode” for its Copilot assistant inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint, moving the tool from a passive adviser to an agent that can make live edits inside documents.
Announced on April 23, 2026, the feature—branded internally as “vibe working”—is now the default experience for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers and is also available to Personal and Family plan users.
Agent Mode uses improved foundation models to follow multi-step instructions and execute complex edits while showing a realtime sidebar of actions taken.
In Word it can draft, rewrite and adjust tone; in Excel it can insert formulas, tables and visuals; in PowerPoint it can update slides while respecting company templates.
Microsoft cited early engagement gains—Excel engagement up 67%, satisfaction up 65% and new user retention up 50%—as evidence of utility.
The move has prompted pushback from critics and some enterprise admins over forced integration, trust and governance, although Microsoft highlights visibility and controls (including opt-out) to address those concerns.
