Israeli naval forces intercepted and boarded vessels of the Global Sumud flotilla in international waters off Crete on April 29-30, 2026, detaining scores of activists and seizing multiple boats.
Organisers say the mission, which sailed from Barcelona earlier in April and included dozens of boats and hundreds to more than 1,000 participants according to different claims, was approached by military speedboats that pointed lasers and firearms, jammed communications and disabled engines.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry said about 175 activists from more than 20 boats were being taken to Israel.
Reports on the number of vessels seized vary — organisers and media cited figures from seven to 22 boats boarded or losing contact.
Participants included nationals from Australia and European countries; Irish campaigners said President Catherine Connolly’s sister was aboard.
Israeli officials defended the operation as enforcing the blockade on Gaza to prevent arms smuggling.
Critics, including the flotilla organisers and Turkey’s foreign ministry, described the action as illegal “piracy” in international waters and called for accountability.
The interception echoes a similar 2025 flotilla seizure that drew international condemnation and deportations of activists.
