Honda Motor Co. is reported to be more definitively halting plans for a C$15 billion (about US$11 billion) electric-vehicle and battery complex near Alliston, Ontario, after pausing the project in May 2025.
Announced in 2024 and originally due to begin production in 2028 with capacity for about 240,000 vehicles annually, the project was a centrepiece of Canadaās recent auto strategy and had potential federal and provincial support of up to C$5 billion.
Multiple Canadian officials, including Industry Minister MƩlanie Joly and Prime Minister Mark Carney, say they are in regular contact with Honda; the company has not formally confirmed the reports.
Government and industry sources point to slumping EV demand in the United States, the removal of U.S. purchase incentives, and new U.S. tariffs and policy shifts as key pressures prompting Hondaās pivot to hybrids for North America.
The reported move adds to a string of scaled-back EV investments in Canada and raises questions about jobs, supply-chain projects and the viability of large battery investments in the country.
