Reports on March 28 say Ubisoft's recent round of cuts and project cancellations are affecting the development of a new Ghost Recon, codenamed OVR. Insider Gaming sources cited by TheGamer report that Red Storm Entertainment ā a historic Ubisoft-owned studio ā will lay off about 105 employees, and dozens of those affected were actively working on OVR. The title is being positioned as a return-to-roots, first-person tactical shooter with a separate multiplayer suite and is considered a crucial release for Ubisoft in the coming fiscal year alongside an Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake.
OVR had already been scaled back, and the loss of staff raises prospects of further descoping, delays or potential quality impacts.
The moves follow other strategic cutbacks, including the cancellation of the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake, and are presented as cost-saving measures that could nevertheless undermine projects intended to generate near-term revenue.
