Sony announced a global price increase across its PlayStation 5 lineup effective April 2, 2026, marking the second hike in less than a year.
In the United States the standard PS5 will rise $100 to $649.99, the Digital Edition to $599.99, the PS5 Pro will jump $150 to $899.99 and the PlayStation Portal remote player will move to $249.99.
Sony cited âcontinued pressures in the global economic landscapeâ as the reason.
Analysts point to surging DRAM and NAND prices driven by AI data-centre demand, supply-chain disruption and geopolitical shocks â including a recent attack on a Qatari gas facility that cut helium exports used in semiconductor fabrication.
The announcement has prompted a run on inventory, documented panic buying and retailer responses such as GameStopâs limited-time extra trade-in credit to make Pro upgrades cheaper.
Industry observers warn the move may accelerate predictions that next-generation consoles (PlayStation 6 and Microsoftâs Project Helix) could debut with $1,000-plus price tags and could depress console sales and shift greater revenues toward software and services.
