Neil Newbon, the award-winning actor best known for his lauded portrayal of the vampire companion Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3, said in a March 27, 2026 interview that he has declined several offers because they sought a repeat of that performance.
Speaking to FRVR, Newbon cited David Bowie’s constant reinvention as an influence, saying “extreme repetition breeds stagnation” and that some projects wanted “the Astarion thing” — a similarity he felt would limit his ability to bring anything new to a role.
He stressed he remains open to revisiting Astarion on his own terms, and noted he’s been taking a variety of very different parts since the game’s release.
Coverage of the comments appeared across gaming outlets including IGN, PC Gamer, Eurogamer and TheGamer.
The remarks come as HBO has said it is developing a Baldur’s Gate 3 television adaptation and has discussed continuity of characters with the game’s cast, though any return by Newbon has not been confirmed.
