Netflix unveiled Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, an animated reimagining of Roald Dahl’s classic slated to stream in 2027.
The feature will be co-directed by Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan and animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks, the studio behind recent hits such as Kpop Demon Hunters and Spider-Verse titles.
Taika Waititi will voice Willy Wonka and serve as an executive producer; Kit Connor voices a new protagonist, teenager Charlie Paley.
Producers include Oscar-winner Aron Warner and Timothy Yoo.
Netflix released the first image showing a contemporary London setting and said the film will introduce new characters, original songs and some “surprise returns.” The story follows Wonka returning to his factory after serving time for turning a child into a blueberry, and a group of teens led by Charlie Paley who plan to break in to save their homes.
The project continues Netflix’s roll-out of Roald Dahl adaptations since acquiring the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021 and is positioned as a flagship family animation for the streamer’s 2027 slate.
