Paramount announced at CinemaCon on April 16, 2026, that Top Gun 3 is officially in development with Tom Cruise returning as Lt.
Pete âMaverickâ Mitchell and producer Jerry Bruckheimer rejoining the project.
Studio co-head Josh Greenstein said a script is underway; Ehren Kruger, who was tapped to write a follow-up in 2024, has been linked to the screenplay.
No director has been confirmed and Paramount did not announce a production start date or wider cast commitments.
The sequel follows the 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed roughly $1.5 billion worldwide and reinvigorated audiences and theatrical revenues.
David Ellison, whose Skydance ties figure in Paramountâs recent corporate reshaping, has identified a third Top Gun as a studio priority.
Cruise also featured in Paramountâs CinemaCon presentation video this week, underscoring his continued commercial draw.
Beyond the core confirmation, plot details remain secret and returning cast members from Maverick, including Miles Teller, have not been officially named for the new instalment.
