📰 Full Story
Taoiseach Micheál Martin has secured public backing from a string of Fianna Fáil ministers and backbenchers after internal unrest over the government’s response to disruptive fuel price protests.
Between April 16-17, senior figures including Dara Calleary, Jim O’Callaghan and Darragh O’Brien publicly declared confidence in Martin, while other ministers and TDs — Norma Foley, James Lawless, Thomas Byrne, Niall Collins, Timmy Dooley, Charlie McConalogue and a number of backbenchers — voiced support.
The show of unity follows a statement from the party’s three youngest TDs expressing “real and deep concern” about recent events and the party’s direction, and critical comments from long-time critic John McGuinness.
Allies such as Jack Chambers and former Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl urged internal discussion rather than a leadership challenge.
Supporters say continuity is needed amid “extraordinary global uncertainty,” while critics call for changes in party decision-making and engagement with constituents affected by rising fuel costs.
The immediate prospect of a leadership heave appears to have faded, but party sources say debate over strategy and internal reform will continue.
