Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s powerful army chief, has taken a central behind‑the‑scenes role mediating between the United States and Iran, visiting Tehran on April 16–17 as Islamabad seeks a second round of talks.
Pakistani officials and diplomatic reporting say Munir maintained contact with political and military leaders in Washington and Tehran after Pakistan hosted a rare face‑to‑face delegation meeting in Islamabad the previous week.
Photographs and an X post by Iranian negotiator Abbas Araghchi showed Munir arriving in Tehran and being publicly received by Iranian officials.
Munir, promoted earlier to field marshal and appointed both chief of army staff and head of the defence forces, has unique institutional reach — having led Military Intelligence and the ISI — and cultivated relations with US leaders, including praise from President Donald Trump.
Pakistani civilian ministers have been publicly active in diplomacy, but analysts say coordination has been driven from Rawalpindi by the military.
Reports also tie recent moves — including a temporary ceasefire and exchange of proposals — to Munir’s shuttle diplomacy amid wider regional tensions such as a US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
