Nathalie Baye, one of the stalwarts of French cinema, has died at the age of 77, her family told Agence France-Presse.
She passed away at her Paris home on Friday, April 17, following a diagnosis of Lewy body dementia.
Bayeâs five-decade career included some 80 films and numerous stage and television appearances.
A four-time CĂ©sar winner, she broke through in François Truffautâs 1973 Day for Night and later worked with auteurs including Jean-Luc Godard, Maurice Pialat and Xavier Dolan.
International audiences knew her from roles such as the mother in Steven Spielbergâs Catch Me If You Can (2002) and as Madame de Montmirail in Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022). She is survived by her daughter, actress Laura Smet.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Culture Minister Catherine PĂ©gard led tributes, praising her contribution to the nationâs cultural life.
Baye was also publicly associated with causes including climate action and assisted dying reform.
Her family said she had been living with the neurodegenerative condition, which can cause movement problems, confusion and hallucinations.
