X announced on April 23, 2026 that it will retire its Communities feature in May after concluding the forum-like groups were little used and generated disproportionate moderation work.
Head of Product Nikita Bier said Communities were used by under 0.4% of users but accounted for about 80% of spam reports, scams and malware complaints.
X told Community admins they should move members into the appâs revamped group-chat offering, XChat, which supports joinable public links and currently holds up to 350 people with plans to expand to 1,000 or more.
X is also steering users toward Custom Timelines â AIâdriven, topic-based feeds powered by Grok and available to Premium subscribers â as a way to surface focused content.
The company gave administrators a migration window in early-to-late May 2026, with initial shutdown timing set for May 6 and some groups allowed to transition by May 30.
X framed the change as a strategic shift away from slow forum-style experiences toward real-time chat and AI-curated feeds as it accelerates product launches.
