Three Indian Army personnel, including Major General Sachin Mehta, survived a Cheetah light helicopter crash in the Tangtse sector near Leh on May 20, Indian officials confirmed on May 23.
The single-engine chopper, used for high-altitude logistics and reconnaissance, went down during a routine flight; all three occupants sustained minor injuries.
The army has ordered a Court of Inquiry to establish technical, mechanical or environmental causes.
A post-crash selfie taken by Mehta circulated widely on social media.
The incident has revived scrutiny of the ageing Cheetah/Cheetal fleet, in service since the 1970s, even as the Army plans phased replacement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limitedâs Light Utility Helicopters (LUH) under its modernisation programme.
The service also warned against misinformation after unrelated viral footage was circulated in parallel with coverage of the crash.
