On May 23, 2026, U.S. Marines flew two MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor aircraft into Caracas for a rapid-response and embassy reinforcement drill at the recently reopened U.S. Embassy.
The aircraft, identified with markings of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 (VMM-263), landed in the embassy parking area and inserted forces as part of an evacuation and emergency-response scenario.
U.S. Southern Command chief Marine Gen.
Francis L. Donovan observed the exercise in person.
Venezuelan authorities had authorised the drill as preparation for medical or catastrophic emergencies; the U.S. embassy said ensuring rapid response capability is central to mission readiness.
The exercise follows the U.S. reopening of its Caracas mission nearly two months earlier after the ouster of NicolĂĄs Maduro in January and comes after a Jan. 3 operation that resulted in Maduro and his wife being taken to the United States on drug-charges, which they have pleaded not guilty to.
Some Caracas residents watched the visible demonstration while a smaller group protested with a banner reading âNo to the Yankee drill.â Reports indicate the operation was supported by U.S. naval forces operating offshore.
