Liverpool FC have sacked head coach Arne Slot with immediate effect after a turbulent second season in charge that followed his surprise Premier League triumph in 2024-25.
The Fenway Sports Group-owned club said the decision, announced on May 30, 2026, was âdifficultâ but necessary after Liverpool finished fifth with 60 points â their lowest total since 2015-16 and 25 points behind champions Arsenal.
Slot, 47, was backed heavily in the transfer market last summer as Liverpool spent a record outlay on new signings, but high-profile recruits including Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz struggled with injuries and form.
The campaign was also marked by the death of forward Diogo Jota and a visible breakdown in relations between Slot and key players, notably Mohamed Salah, who left the club at seasonâs end.
Sporting director Richard Hughes and FSG chief executive Michael Edwards led the move; Liverpool said a successor appointment process is under way, with Bournemouthâs Andoni Iraola widely reported as the leading candidate.
The club said it wants a more front-foot, aggressive style of play for the next phase.
