Billy Gilmour, the 24-year-old Napoli midfielder, has been ruled out of the FIFA World Cup after suffering a knee injury in Scotland’s 4-1 friendly win over Curaçao at Hampden Park on Saturday, the Scottish FA said on May 30, 2026.
Gilmour limped off in the 42nd minute, underwent scans and will return to Napoli for rehabilitation.
Scotland manager Steve Clarke described the timing as “so, so cruel” for a player who was central to their qualifying campaign and has 46 caps.
Findlay Curtis replaced Gilmour in the match and scored; Clarke has named a short list of potential replacements including Manchester United youngster Tyler Fletcher, and has on standby Lennon Miller, Connor Barron and Andy Irving.
Scotland fly to the United States on Sunday to begin final preparations ahead of their Group C World Cup opening fixtures against Haiti and later Morocco and Brazil in mid-June.
The loss deprives Clarke of a key deep-lying playmaker days before the squad departs for the tournament.
